April weddings' gardens and flowers at

Chateau du Rivau France Loire Valley

The flowers of the chateau du Rivau garden celebrate the arrival of spring.

Tulips at the chateau du Rivau

The new collection of tulips from the Rivau gardens has everything to please, the massification of red flowers in the alley of the fairies has a real panache that will be appreciated by amateurs and walkers.

Muscari Arméniacum at the chateau du Rivau

April's blue sky like the flower carpets of chateau du Rivau.

The first flowers are the blue bulbs. At Rivau, carpets of Muscari armeniacum have been enthusiastically naturalized at the foot of the fruit trees of the Paradise orchard. Their herringbone flowers of a true cobalt blue and about fifteen centimeters in height are bordered by a thin white collar. A wonder of delicacy.

Muscari latifolium even if they are less numerous are of interest because they have the particularity of being two-tone: the base of the ear is a darker blue which degrades into a lighter blue at the top of the flower, a curiosity not to be missed!

Cousins of the Muscaris, the Siberian Scilles that populate the Enchanted Forest from March are even more intense blue. They formed a magnificent, almost neon blue carpet, especially as the feet with shiny green leaves bear 3 or 5 flowering stems from March to April.

Glory of snow at the chateau du Rivau

Speaking of blue, the Chionodoxa lucilae, which we call "glory of the snow" is not to be outdone. Their blue petals are almost phosphorescent especially as the center of their petals is white and seem to make them shine. In Rivau, they spread generously in the undergrowth of Bois Amoureux.

Blanda Anemones at Chateau du Rivau

And then planted between the tufts of grasses which will not develop until May, more than 12,000 blanda anemones with blue daisies adore the limestone soil of the Rivau gardens because they originate from the alkaline lands of the Balkans.

Hellebores at the chateau du Rivau

From February to April, the Hellebores make us forget the greyness. Oriental Hellebores and Fetid Hellebores fight to be the stars of the enchanted forest from the beginning of February. They enjoy themselves in the limestone soil of the Rivau and are sown alone; they bring an extraordinary mass effect. White, dew, purplish, wine lees, chartreuse, there is something for everyone.

Fritillaries at chateau du Rivau

Then it’s the gold fritillaries and daffodil collections that draw attention.

Then it is the fritillaries which point their nose. At Rivau, we have established the imperial fritillaries ‘maxima Lutea’. Their golden yellow bells are really maximum even if they are pointed towards the ground, in groups of 5 or 6 on each rod.

Faithful, they return every year and light up the Petit Poucet garden from the very first days. If the sun breaks through, you must hunt the beetle, which also loves it.

Then it will be the turn of our daffodil collections to show off.
